The History:
For over 20 years Pocklington and District Lions Club (PDLC) have provided Motorised Scooters and Wheelchairs on loan, free of charge to people in the community of Pocklington and local villages. This project, aimed at helping improve their mobility and independence in the area, was initiated and lead by Lion David Tinson. One of the first recipients of the first scooters said “Thank you Pocklington Lions you have changed my whole life. I can now go out and about town. What the Lions will not have thought of is how it has changed my husband’s life. We can now go out together or apart”. PDLC have continued with this project and important service to the community following Lion David’s death in February 2017. It has progressed and expanded and last year the club had a fleet of over 20 motorised scooters and a number of wheelchairs. Each year the club has held a Tea Party in Burnby Hall Gardens for the scooter users.
The club has also recently purchased 3 new lightweight, collapsible, transportable wheelchairs to add to their fleet and 2 tricycles for children with special needs on the basis that they will be returned to the club when the children outgrow them for re-issue to other children with special needs.unity.
Recently the club acknowledged that a number of the motorised scooters were needing much more attention and maintenance and therefore enquiries were made to source financial support to enable the replacement of part of the motorised scooter fleet. In June 2021, Trustee and Treasurer of PDLC, Lion John Eeles made a financial support application to St Helen’s Farm Ltd, Seaton Ross, York in the hope that a vote by the staff would recommend this for approval. In December, the business was bought back by the previous owners Angus & Kathleen Wielkopolski who were keen to continue to invest and support their local community. Jackie East of St Helen’s Farm submitted and proposed the application and on 20th December 2021 she confirmed that PDLC would receive the sum of £12,500 to replace part of our motorised scooter fleet. On behalf of all the members of Pocklington and District Lions Club (CIO) Lion John Eeles thanked her and Angus & Kathleen, the owners of St Helen’s Farm, for their very kind generosity which will improve the service that the club will be able to provide to the people in our comm
The club also provides a limited wheelchair/walker loan service to anyone in the community that has a need for one for a short period. There is no charge for the loan although we are always grateful for donations. See details below or use our contact page.
