MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE (MIAB)
Lions Message in a Bottle is a simple but effective way for people to keep their basic personal and medical details where they can be found in an emergency, on a standard form and in a common location – the fridge door!
The project helps emergency services personnel save valuable time identifying an individual and knowing if they’ve allergies or take special medication.
No, its not the 1999 film ‘Message in a Bottle’ or the pop song of the same name. MIAB is a project funded Lions Clubs of Great Britain that potentially saves lives, and it could be YOURS! MIAB is a simple idea designed to encouraged people to keep their personal and medical information in a common location. Originally focused on the more vulnerable members of the community, anyone of any age can have an accident in the home.
Personal information is recorded on a standard form that gives details of medication and allergies as well who to contact in an emergency. What is also included is details of who to contact to care for any pets.
The white plastic bottle, comes with a green, easy open lid. Once completed the form is put in the bottle which is then placed in the door of the family fridge. Emergency services will be alerted to your membership of the scheme by two ‘ Green Cross Labels’. One label is fixed to the inside of the door most used to access the premises, the other is attached to the door of the fridge that contains the “Message” All the emergency services are trained to look for the ‘Green Cross Labels’ Being a member of ‘Message in a Bottle’ scheme gives emergency services access to vital information in the event of an incident.
MIAB is not just for old or vulnerable people, you could have one in your car cubby hole, your rucksack. It could be your life it saves!!
